BAGGAGE - New requirements for transporting retained firearms in Chile

In compliance with an order of the Chilean Civil Aviation Administration (DGCA), new requirements have been implemented regarding the transportation of firearms as retained baggage on domestic flights within Chile.

Description:

Carrying a firearm as retained baggage  means that the passenger carries the firearm to the airport and must  surrender it for "retention" during the trip, , with authorization and inspection by the Airport Security (AVSEC) team.

Passengers who need to transport firearms within Chile as checked baggage must make the request via Global Sales SUpport at least 2 hours before the flight. We recommend requesting this special service BEFORE issuing the ticket.

The requirements included in the regulation are:

  • A maximum of 5 retained firearms will be accepted per flight.

  • There is no limit to the number of firearms transported by an individual customer, as long as the maximum number permitted per flight is observed.

  • Passengers must present themselves at the AVSEC control at least 1 hour before the flight's departure time.

  • In order to be accepted for transportation, all firearms and magazines must be in a hard-sided container (plastic or metal) and must be unloaded.

  • Ammunition: Acceptance is limited to a maximum of 5 kg per passenger, inside a hard-sided, secured and sealed container (it will not be boarded as retained baggage).

Passengers who transport firearms as checked baggage in the aircraft’s hold (SSR WEAP) do not have this restriction.

Scope:

Transport of firearms on 100% domestic flights within Chile (excludes codeshare flights).

Date of implementation:

June 07, 2024

Considerations

  • The request for transporting weapons is not active via GDS, so agencies will see it reflected in the booking/order through an OSI YY WEAPONS AS RETAINED KK. The GSS agent will be responsible for entering the OSI in the reservation.

  • Please inform the customer that the firearm must be handed over by the passenger themselves to the DGAC security personnel at the AVSEC control of the departure airport.
