BAGGAGE - New special and oversized baggage policy

FYI -  This is to inform that the current policy for special baggage subject to charges will be changed as follows for tickets issued on or after January 17, 2018 for flights as from that date:

  • The current definition of special baggage will now be divided into "special baggage" and "oversized baggage"
  • An oversized baggage fee will be implemented for "unconventional baggage"that at a glance clearly exceeds the 158 linear centimeters permitted as baggage allowance.

Accordingly, the new definitions for oversized and special baggage are the following:

Special baggage (sports gear, musical instruments, audiovisual equipment)

Special baggage comprises a number of specific items that are not included in the checked baggage allowance and must therefore always be associated to a single fixed fee.

These items may measure up to 300 linear centimeters (see exceptions below) and weigh up to the maximum permitted for the route (32 or 45 kilograms, depending on the route), so they are not subject to any additional fees for overweight, oversize or additional piece. However, if the maximum size in linear centimeters is exceeded, the item must be transported by LATAM Cargo exclusively.

Exceptions:

  • Top tier passengers with Black Signature, Black, Platinum, Emerald and Sapphire (oneworld) status traveling in Economy cabin may replace one (1) piece of their checked baggage allowance with one (1) special item up to 32 or 45 kilograms (depending on the route) at no cost. A special baggage fee will be charged from the second special item onwards.
  • Passengers traveling in Premium cabins may replace the three (3) items in their checked baggage allowance up to 32 or 45 kg (depending on the route) at no cost; A special baggage fee will be charged from the fourth special item onwards.
  • Top tier passengers travelling in Premium cabins will have the most permissive benefit, hence, they may replace the three (3) item in their checked baggage.
