BAGGAGE - TSA restrictions on the transport of powders

We inform to our travel agents the new Transport Security Administration (TSA) rules:

New restrictions apply for the transport of any powdered substance that exceeds the volume of 350 ml (12 Oz) and goes in the cabin on flights to the United States

  • From 30 June, new TSA rules will restrict the transport of powders for all passengers traveling to the United States
  • Passengers will not be able to transport powder products larger than 350ml (12oz) in the cabin as part of hand luggage
  • Powder products larger than 350ml (12oz) will only be permitted as part of checked luggage (*)

LATAM will restrict the transport of powder products on flights to the United States from June 30, 2018 to comply with new United States Transport Security Administration (TSA) travel rules for all airlines operating commercial flights to the country.

Starting this date, passengers will not be able to transport powder products larger than 350ml (12oz) in the cabin as part of hand luggage. Powder products larger than this size will only be permitted in checked-luggage.

TSA has defined powders as ‘fine dry particles that are produced by the grinding, crushing or disintegration of a solid substance’ and include – but are not limited to – products such as flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices, powdered milk and cosmetics.

(*) Exceptions:

Subject to inspection, certain powdered products over 350 ml will will continue to be permitted in the cabin such as prescribed medicines and baby formula. Likewise, duty free powder products over 350ml (12oz) will be permitted if they are transported in authorized, sealed bags.

To avoid confusion and potential travel disruption, LATAM advises all passengers who wish to transport powder products over 350ml to the United States to do so as part of checked luggage when possible.

LATAM is committed to fully complying with the rules and regulations in each market where it operates as well as to upholding safety and security as fundamental values in its operational standards.
