SPECIAL PASSENGERS - Changes to the acceptance of respiratory assistance medical devices

FYI - This is to inform that effective January 31st, 2018 a number of changes will be introduced to the acceptance of respiratory assistance medical devices such as BiPAP, APAP, CPAP, EPAP, VPAP or ventilators. The changes are:

  • The requirement to obtain a physician's statement or certificate is removed for passengers traveling with these devices. Similarly, the need to give a 48-hour notice to book the service is also eliminated.
  • Some respiratory assistance medical devices not included in the List of accepted devices will be allowed for carriage, provided they have a label indicating they are approved for airline use. Example: "This device does not exceed the maximum level of radiated radio frequency interference as described in the current edition of Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) Document (DO) 160, section 21, Category M"
  • Seat assignment restrictions have been lifted for passengers traveling with these devices.
  • Passengers are allowed to connect their devices onboard, although they must be informed that they need to carry enough batteries to ensure device operation during the entire flight, as connecting cables may not be available from the airline. Passengers must be warned that the maximum power permitted for these connectors is 75 W.

Therefore, if a passenger contacts to inform they are traveling with a PAP-type respiratory assistance device, s/he must be advised that:

1. LATAM allows the onboard use of those devices included in the List of accepted devices or labeled as approved for airline use. This may be verified at any point of the journey.

2. Obtaining a physician's statement* is no longer required for carrying these devices.

3. Enough batteries must be carried for the duration of the flight. Batteries must be packed individually in compliance with the hazardous materials regulation available at latam.com. Passengers must also be informed that the device may be charged onboard if connecting cables are available.

4. These devices do not count towards the standard baggage allowance and therefore are free of charge if carried onboard for use during the flight.5. In case of interline itineraries, passengers must check the conditions for acceptance set up by the other carriers. A backup note must be included in the PNR indicating the above information has been provided:

YY OSI PSGR ADV PAP CONDITIONS FOR USE ON BOARD

YY OSI PSGR ADV BATTERIES WITH AUTONOMY FOR THE DURATION OF FLT

(*) Passengers suffering from a condition or disease included in the List of medical conditions must complete the procedure specified in the Physician's Statement section.

All other standards regarding the transportation and acceptance of these devices remain unchanged.
