On 1 August 2018, Law 21,070 comes into effect, regulating the right of Chilean and other nationals to visit and reside in the special territory of Easter Island.

Santiago, Chile, 26 July 2018 – Starting Wednesday 1 August 2018, those travelling to Easter Island as tourists will only be able to stay up to a maximum of 30 days. In addition, under the new rules visitors must report to the Investigative Police of Chile (PDI) on arrival to the island.

From this date, all visitors must also fill outva Unique Entry Form (FUI), present an identity card or passport and a return plane ticket. In addition, it is required to show a copy of a reservation made in accommodation authorised byChile’s National Tourism Service (SERNATUR) or an invitation letter from a member of the Rapa Nui peopleor someone authorized to reside on the island, which must be extended through the Provincial Government of Easter Island.

The new law also establishes those eligible to stay on the island for more than 30 days, which include: the Rapa Nui people and their families, current residents, contracted workers or those who carry out independent economic activity on the island, public officials, authority representatives and researchers as well as pre-candidates and candidates on theelectoral register, in accordance with the current regulation.

As the only commercial airline group that operates flights to/from Easter Island, LATAM has worked with Chile’s Ministry of the Interior and Public Security on the implementation of this new law, which is designed to conserve the ecological and cultural heritage of this special territory – like Ecuador’s law protecting the Galapagos Islands.

Given the new travel requirements for the island, LATAM is recommending that its passengers arrive at the departing airport at least three hours in advance of their flight to provide sufficient time to comply with the stipulated formalities.
