    Excess baggage

    This section outlines LATAM’s rules for transporting baggage that exceeds permitted weight, size, or quantity. Learn how to identify additional pieces, overweight, and oversize items, as well as applicable charges and exceptions. For detailed fares and route values, visit Excess baggage on LATAM.com 

      When a passenger’s baggage exceeds the size, weight, or quantity included in the purchased fare, the corresponding excess baggage fee must be applied. Excess baggage can occur in three different ways:

      Additional baggage:

      What does it mean? Extra baggage that you carry, in addition to the free baggage allowance of your ticket fare.

      Flights between Ecuador and the USA: for flights between Ecuador and the United States, a maximum of 2 bags per passenger is permitted. 

      Excess Baggage:

      Small bag: small bag weighing 13 kilograms (28 lb) or more per piece.

      Checked bag: checked bag weighing 24 kg (52 lb) or more per piece. 

      Oversize 

      What does it mean? Baggage with dimensions exceeding 158 cm (62'') and up to 300 linear cm (height + length + width).

      Baggage over 300 cm: If your baggage exceeds 300 linear cm, please contact LATAM Cargo. 
      • When a passenger’s baggage exceeds the permitted number of pieces, weight, or dimensions, the corresponding excess baggage fee must be applied. Each checked bag must not exceed 45 kg (99 lb) and 300 linear cm (118 in).
      • Excess baggage fees: Refer to the current LATAM fee table to determine the additional cost when a customer travels with extra baggage or exceeds the allowed measurements or weight.
      • Please note the following exceptions:For flights to, from, or via Argentina, Aruba, Cuba, Europe, Oceania, South Africa, or Venezuela, the maximum weight per checked bag is 32 kg (70 lb).
      • For flights connecting with Air Canada, British Airways, Iberia, or Qantas, the maximum weight per checked bag is also 32 kg (70 lb). We recommend always checking the itinerary and verifying the applicable excess baggage policies with each carrier.
      • If the customer’s itinerary includes connecting flights, LATAM applies a single excess baggage fee from the origin to the final destination, based on the highest value of the route flown.
      • Baggage exceeding these limits cannot be transported in the aircraft hold. If transportation of overweight or oversized baggage is required, the customer must be referred to LATAM Cargo.
      • Some musical instruments, televisions, monitors, sports, and audiovisual equipment are considered special baggage and may be transported in the hold for a flat extra fee. This service can be added during ticket purchase, through My Trips, at LATAM Sales Offices, via the Contact Center, or directly at the airport.
      • Customers may also purchase additional, checked, or special baggage either during the ticket purchase or later on. Please note that unused additional baggage is non-refundable and non-transferable.
      • If the trip begins on a flight operated by another airline, additional baggage must be purchased at the airport, at the corresponding airline’s counter.
      • Important: Charges for additional baggage, excess weight, and oversized items are cumulative and charged separately. If a passenger arrives at the boarding gate with more baggage than allowed in quantity, size, or weight, it will be checked into the hold, and the corresponding surcharge will apply. Otherwise, LATAM will not be able to transport the item or assume responsibility for it.
